Arrest Report - January 29, 2015

According to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert, over the last 24 hour reporting period, the Sheriff’s Office responded to 44 complaints and reports the following arrests:


Melvin Sylvester, Sr., 54, 1412 James Street, Morgan City, LA was arrested on January 28, 2015 at 9:30 pm for the following offenses:


- Resisting an officer (giving false information)

- Flight from an officer

- Criminal trespass

- Battery of a police officer

- Disturbing the peace (foul language)

- Illegal possession of stolen firearms

- Possession of a firearm or carrying of a concealed weapon by aperson convicted of certain felonies

- Public intimidation and retaliation

- 3 warrants for failure to appear on the charges of criminal neglect of family with bonds totaling $9,874.64


A deputy assigned to patrol the Amelia area observed a male subject walking on Grace Street. In light of a recent residential burglary in the area, the deputy attempted to speak with the subject. The subject made eye contact with the deputy and proceeded to flee on foot. The deputy gave chase through a private yard when the subject stopped and dropped a handgun to the ground. As the deputy detained the subject, the unidentified male struck the deputy in the forehead with his fist. During the subsequent investigation, the male subject began yelling and cursing causing a disturbance to residents in the neighborhood. The subject also refused to identify himself. With the assistance of witnesses at the scene, the deputy identified the subject as Sylvester. The deputy retrieved the handgun Sylvester dropped during the foot pursuit and later identified it as a weapon that was stolen during a residential burglary that occurred on James Street in Amelia. The deputy transported Sylvester to the parish jail for booking. During transport, Sylvester made repeated threats against the deputy’s life. No bail is set.



According to St. Mary Parish Sheriff Mark Hebert the Narcotics Division made the following arrests:



Renwic White, 23, 1325 Martin Luther King Road, Baldwin, LA was arrested on January 28, 2015 at 5:03 pm for possession of marijuana, 2nd offense, and possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute. Detectives with the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division were contacted to assist the Baldwin Police Department in an investigation of a subject selling illegal drugs on Baptiste Street. Detectives made contact with White who was sitting in a vehicle and observed a marijuana cigarette and two crack cocaine rocks. The crack rocks were bagged consistent with street level illicit drug sales. Following the investigation, White was transported to the parish jail for booking. No bail is set.
