On February 12, 2015, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local hospital of a possible domestic battery. Investigators learned that Troy Benoit and Melba Royer were involved in an argument during which Benoit threw Royer to the ground, grabbed her face and neck, and repeatedly kicked her. Royer suffered broken ribs and a collapsed lung. Detectives obtained a warrant for Benoit on the charge of domestic abuse battery and effected an arrest on February 18, 2015. Benoit was transported to the parish jail and held without bond.
On February 27, 2015, deputies responded to a medical emergency involving an unresponsive female at a residence on Teche Road in Bayou Vista. The female, identified as Royer, was pronounced deceased by the St. Mary Parish Coroner. Detectives began a criminal investigation into Royer’s death. Investigators learned that the autopsy report indicates that Royer’s death was caused by complications from blunt force injuries that were the result of the battery. This morning, detectives charged Troy Benoit, 51, of Patterson with manslaughter. Benoit remains incarcerated at the St. Mary Parish Law Enforcement Center with no bail set.
