Yesterday afternoon, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office received a report of a phone scam. The complainant stated that the caller posed as a Cleco representative and threatened to cut off the electricity unless money was sent immediately. The caller appeared to be contacting the victim from a seemingly legitimate (spoofed) utility company phone number in order to support the scam. Sheriff Mark Hebert says this particular scam seems to be making its way back into the region. The hallmark of this scam and other similar scams is that the caller attempts to instill a sense of urgency and fear in the victim. St. Mary residents and businesses need to be aware of these types of scams and should never give out personal information over the phone or send/wire money unless they are the ones who initiated the call to a company through an established phone number.
