Winners of Robot Naming Contest Announced

Residents of St. Mary Parish ages 6-16 were asked to help name two remotely operated robots. Funded through the Port Security Grant Program, these newest technological members of the Sheriff’s Office are used to explore places too dangerous for police and also serve as ambassadors that help teach children about safety.

Sheriff Mark Hebert announces the winners of the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office Name the Robot Contest. Names chosen by Madelyn Compton and Bryson Landry will be used when introducing the robots at schools, churches, and visits to the communities of St. Mary Parish.

Meet Robots Armstrong and Joshua

After seeing both of the robots exhibited at safety presentations, Compton and Landry decided to participate in the contest. Compton chose the name Armstrong for the larger robot because of its arm. Landry named the smaller robot Joshua. He says he chose that name because of the warrior Joshua in the bible. He says, “The robots are acting as warriors so the name is fitting.” The winners were presented with $100 Walmart gift cards sponsored by Gator Rigging.
