Term: 1818-1821

St. Mary Parish was created in 1811. However, recorded history of the early days of law enforcement in the parish is limited. Pictures of those who have served as St. Mary Parish Sheriffs are on display in the lobby of the Sheriff’s Office in Franklin.

The St. Mary Parish Clerk of Court’s Office indicates the parish’s fourth sheriff, Jared Young Sanders, I, took office in 1818. Young-Sanders’ time as sheriff set the cornerstone for a legacy of public service that made its mark on both the parish and the State of Louisiana. Following Jared Young-Sanders’ example of public service, his grandson, Jared Young-Sanders, III, was elected as state governor years later in 1908.
